Caring for Silver Jewelry

Practical guide: How to properly care for, clean, and store your 925 sterling silver jewelry. Tips for preventing tarnishing and scratches, and for lasting shine.

13. October 2025 Eduard Körber

925 sterling silver is a durable, high-quality material – but like any precious metal, it needs proper care to retain its shine. With a few simple steps, your jewelry will stay perfect for years to come. Here's how to properly care for your necklaces, bracelets, and rings.

1. Regular cleaning: Polishing cloth for everyday use

The simplest method: Regularly wipe your jewelry with a soft polishing cloth. This removes light dirt, fingerprints, and skin oils that accumulate over time. A polishing cloth is included with every Kerber Jewelry piece – use it after wearing your jewelry to maintain its shine.

A quick wipe is often enough to make your jewelry look fresh.

2. Deep cleaning: Water, soap and ultrasonic bath

For more stubborn dirt, water and mild soap are a good home remedy. Place your jewelry in lukewarm soapy water and clean it gently with a soft brush – dirt tends to collect especially in the spaces between the links.

For those who want to take it to the next level, a small ultrasonic cleaner is an option. These devices remove deep-seated impurities that are barely visible to the naked eye, restoring the jewelry's sparkle.

3. Why is silver tarnishing?

Silver naturally tarnishes over time – this is not a quality defect, but a chemical reaction. The sulfur in the air reacts with the silver and forms a dark sulfide layer. This is completely normal and can be easily removed.

A polishing cloth or gentle cleaning will restore its original shine. The more often you wear your jewelry, the less it will tarnish – the friction against your skin polishes it naturally.

4. Proper storage: Dry and protected

It's best to store your jewelry in a dry place. Moisture accelerates tarnishing, so you shouldn't store it in the bathroom or in damp rooms. The included presentation box is ideal – it protects against dust, scratches, and moisture.

If you have multiple pieces of jewelry, store them separately to avoid scratches.

5. Protection against chemicals

Chemicals are the enemy of sterling silver. Perfume, chlorine, cleaning agents, or aggressive substances can corrode the alloy and make the jewelry porous – which will eventually ruin it.

Therefore: Take off your jewelry before showering, swimming, or working with cleaning products. This will help it stay stable and beautiful in the long run.

6. High-gloss vs. matte: Which is easier to care for?

High-polish jewelry looks spectacular, but it tends to scratch more easily. Every touch, every bump leaves tiny micro-scratches that are more noticeable on shiny surfaces.

Matte or satin finishes are easier to care for in everyday life. They "absorb" small scratches, making them less noticeable. Perfect for everyday wear like the Monolith bracelet or the Requiem necklace.

7. Deep scratches: Off to the goldsmith!

Minor signs of wear are normal and give your jewelry character. For deep scratches, you should consult a goldsmith. They can professionally remove the scratches and repolish the surface.

Handmade jewelry is designed to be repaired and refurbished – unlike cheap mass-produced goods that are discarded after a short time.

8. Care instructions are the same for all jewelry pieces?

Generally, all sterling silver jewelry is cared for in the same way – whether it's a necklace, bracelet, or ring. The only exception is jewelry with gemstones. These usually require individual care, as some stones are sensitive to water, heat, or chemicals.

You can safely use the above-mentioned methods on pure 925 sterling silver without stones.

Conclusion: Care is an investment

Those who invest in handcrafted jewelry should also take care of it. With a few simple steps – regular wiping, proper storage, and protection from chemicals – your sterling silver will remain perfect for years.

Your jewelry is not a disposable item. It's made to be worn, cared for, and passed down. Treat it well – and it will last a lifetime.

Wear it. Care for it. Keep it.
